‘ I have found that books can transfer kids to another place.’ Judith has actually been volunteering as a bedside reader at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust because 2003. After retiring from mentor, Judith wished to continue to use her storytelling skills to assist kids who are badly. ‘I had actually always enjoyed checking out to the kids in school at the end of the day. Mark joined the NHS in his 30s after leaving his family’s service without any formal qualifications, however a drive to make a difference. He started as a psychological health support worker and went on to train as a general nurse. He qualified at 37 and spent the next 20 years steadily rising. He even went back to work in the very same health center ward he was born in, handling the role of ward manager. Today, he’s the Associate Director of Nursing at Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. ‘ I attempted to turn off a bedside light and seemed like something wasn’t ideal with me. I knew quickly it was a stroke.’ In July 2023, after an active holiday kayaking and walking, Bob all of a sudden had a stroke. He was zipped air ambulance to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, where he invested 4 weeks rehabilitating. ‘I used the health club often and did neurorehabilitation online (NROL)’. NROL is a group rehab programme for people who have had a stroke or have other neurological conditions. ‘I had a structured schedule which provided me something to eagerly anticipate weekly – socially, psychologically and emotionally.’ Bob thanked NHS staff for ‘the wonderful support’ and the ongoing physiotherapy he got. ‘ Working along with nurses and seeing the difference they made inspired me to believe, ‘I could do that!” Meet Sharon, a sexual health nurse and non-medical prescriber who started her nursing journey in 1985 at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. In 2010 she joined Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and continues to serve clients in Hertfordshire. ‘I enjoyed helping people and discovering about the body, so nursing just felt right.’ Sharon reflects. Sharon has actually worked in male infertility, menopause, miscarriage and colposcopy among others, revealing the wide range of areas in which nurses make a difference. ‘Truly, I can’t think of a location where nurses don’t make an impact in some form,’ Sharon admits. On why her role is unique, Sharon explains, ‘The care, generosity, and empathy we bring make the nursing role distinct. As client advocates, we help ensure their journey is supported, informed, and genuinely meaningful.’ There are more than 50 different types of nursing functions readily available in the NHS.
